Thanks to everyone who made it out to support the KC Tribe this past weekend.  The Tribe defeated the Minnesota Machine 51-0 in the first round of play-offs.

The Tribe won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half of play.  The defense started strong and forced a punt which left the offense starting at its own 24 yard line.  Jenny Schmidt completed her first three passes to move into Minnesota territory.  A six yard run by Tiara Burns, in addition to a facemask penalty brought the Tribe to the Machine 36 yard line.  On the following play. Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers for 36 yard touchdown.  Amanda Shell added the PAT to make the score 7-0.

The Machine’s second drive stalled out early when Regan Campbell made a pick six from the 29 yard line.  Shell connected on the point after try and the Tribe led 14-0 less than five minutes into the game.  On the next Minnesota series, a mishandled snap led to a Tribe fumble recovery and the KC offense took the field on the Machine 34 yard line.  Schmidt quickly found Katie Sowers down the seam for a 34 yard TD completion.  Shell once again split the uprights and the Tribe lead improved to 21-0 midway through the first quarter.

The Machine advanced the ball into Tribe territory on its next possession, but Liz Sowers stopped the drive short of the red zone with an interception, which she returned to the Tribe 30 yard line.  The Tribe offense quickly moved back into Minnesota territory after a 25 yard completion from Schmidt to Guscott.  A six yard completion from Schmidt to Katie Sowers in the back of the endzone capped off the scoring drive.  Shell added the PAT to make the score 28-0 Tribe.

The Kansas City defense once again forced a Machine punt, and the offense quickly drove down the field and once again found the end zone.  This time Schmidt connected with Jasmine Kingcannon for a 25 yard touchdown reception.  Shell connected on the point after and the Tribe led 35-0 near the end of the first quarter of play.

The teams traded punts on the first two possessions of the second quarter before Regan Campbell made her second interception for a touchdown with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half – this time for 49 yards.  After Shell’s PAT, the Tribe led 42-0.  The Tribe defense forced another three and out, but after a 20 yard reception, Melissa Piper fumbled the football and the Machine offense took the field just short of mid field.  However, Shantrell Hudson quickly backed the Machine up to its own 39 yard line after a 10 yard quarterback sack.  Ultimately, the Machine were once again forced to punt the football and the Tribe took over on its own 42 yard line.

The Tribe moved the ball into the red zone after a 31 yard reception by Regan Campbell.  However, after a great leaping catch inside the five yard line, Lara Guscott fumbled the football and the Machine recovered on the two.  Minnesota failed to gain ground and elected to snap the ball out of the end zone for the safety, making the score 44-0.  Liz Sowers returned the ensuing kick 25 yards and the Tribe offense took the field on the Machine 30 yard line.  After failing to convert the first down, the Tribe elected to attempt a 35 yard field goal.  The kick went wide right and the Machine resumed possession from its own 20 yard line with less than a minute remaining in the first half.  The drive was short lived, as the running back mishandled the pitch on the initial play.  The Tribe recovered the football and took a knee to go into the intermission leading 44-0.

The Machine opted to attempt an on-side kick to open the second half, which featured a continuous clock.  The Tribe recovered the football and the offense started at the Minnesota 47 yard line.  Schmidt connected with Katie Sowers on back to back passes of 14 and 33 yards to find the end zone.  Shell added the extra point and the Tribe led 51-0 three plays into the third quarter.

On the next Minnesota drive, Leslie Gent added the fourth Tribe interception of the day, and the Kansas City offense retook the field on the Minnesota 43 yard line.  A stalled out drive forced the Tribe to punt and the Machine took over on its own 24 yard line.  The Tribe defense denied Minnesota a fourth down conversion attempt and the offense once again took the field.  After a first down completion to Katie Sowers, Schmidt threw for a down field interception.  A three and out by Minnesota led to the Tribe offense taking over on its own 45 with Katie Sowers taking the snaps.

Sowers ran for 12 yards on the initial play of the drive for the first down and then threw a one yard completion to primary signal caller, Jenny Schmidt.  Next, Sowers found Jasmine Kingcannon down field for another Tribe first down.  After a penalty backed the Tribe up, it was Sowers to Sowers for an 11 yard gain.  Kansas City finished the game in victory formation and took a knee.

Jenny Schmidt finished the game with 20 of 25 completions for 323 yards.  Katie Sowers led the team in receiving with seven receptions for 94 yards.  Liz Sowers added five catches for 80 yards.  Defensively, Katie Sowers led the Tribe with 11 tackles, three for a loss and added a sack.  Mindy White and Magdalen Obiefule contributed with eight tackles each.  Shantrell Hudson and Yolanda Ramirez led an impressive outing by the defensive line, finishing with seven and six tackles respectively.  The Tribe finished with four interceptions on the night.  Two by Regan Campbell, both returned for touchdowns, and Liz Sowers and Leslie Gent.

The team will advance to the second round to take on the Dallas Diamonds on July 9th.  This will be a road game for the Tribe, so if you can't make the trip down I-35 be sure to sign up to to follow the team via Twitter for live updates during the game.

The Tribe defeated the Iowa Xplosion 77-0 to finish the season 7-1 and clinch the Midwest Division Championship.  The hot and humid evening started with the visiting Xplosion winning the coin toss and electing to receive the opening kick-off.  The Xplosion moved the ball into Tribe territory before being forced to punt.  However, a bad snap resulted in Katie Sowers tackling the punter for a substantial loss and the Tribe offense opened the game on the Xplosion 48 yard line.  The Tribe's initial drive was a balanced attack, consisting of nine yard completions to Tiara Burns and Liz Sowers, mixed with runs of eight and 10 yards from Burns.  Schimdt connected with Guscott for an 11 yard TD to finish the series.  Newly married Amanda "Sweetkick" Shell (CONGRATULATIONS AMANDA AND GREG!!) added the PAT to make the score 7-0 five minutes into the first quarter.

Iowa completed a 20 yard pass down the middle of the field in their next drive, but Liz Sowers forced a fumble, which the Tribe recovered at its own 29 yard line.  Jenny Schmidt hit Liz Sowers on a quick 2 yard slant and Sowers took the ball 71 yards into the endzone.  Tiara Burns added the two point conversion and the Tribe led 15-0.

After receiving the kick-off, the Xplosion offense took the field on its own 37 yard line.  Jeanne Rankin added her thrid intercpetion of the year on the opening play of the possession, and the Tribe offense retook the field.  After a first down run by Burns, short completion from Schmidt to Liz Bourland, and a five yard run by Katie Sowers, Schmidt found Guscott in the middle of the field for a 30 yard completion and Guscott's second touchdown of the game.  Burns added her second conversion of the night, and the scoreboard read 23-0 nearing the end of the initial quarter.

Iowa moved the ball into Tribe territory once again, but Linzi Weilert put up back-to-back tackles for a loss, the second with assistance by Katie Sowers, and the Xplosion drive stalled once again and turned the ball over on downs on the Tribe 30 yard line.  Schmidt opened the series with a quarterback keeper for 8 yards, followed by a first down run by Burns.  A long gain by Melissa Piper was called back for a penalty, but Liz Sowers made a diving catch to keep the drive alive, allowing Schmidt to find Katie Sowers down the sideline for a 53 yard touchdown reception.  Shell added the point after and the Tribe led 30-0 less than a minute into the second quarter.

The Tribe defense forced a three and out on the next Xplosion series, and after the short punt, the Tribe offense took the field on the Iowa 29 yard line.  Dawn Adams ran for six yards, and then Schmidt found Liz Sowers for the 23 yard TD pass.  The Tribe failed to convert the point after attempt, and the score stood at 36-0.

The Xplosion's next offensive series was short lived as Melissa Piper intercepted the ball on the initial play, and returned it for eight yards to the Iowa 33 yard line.  After three quick runs by Burns, Schmidt found Jeanne Rankin in the endzone for the 20 yard completion.  Shell split the uprights to extend the Tribe lead to 43-0.

The Xplosion offense once again turned the ball over on downs, this time on the Tribe 30 yard line.  Schmidt scrambled for a 17 yard gain to the 13 yard line, and then hit Dawn Adams out of the backfield for a 13 yard TD catch and run.  Shell added the PAT to make the score 50-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.

After a mishandled snap, the Xplosion fumbled the ball and Emily Bates recovered at the Iowa 19 yard line.  With less than a minute remaining in the second quarter, the Tribe elected to try for a field goal.  The kick fell just short of the uprights, and the teams went into the break with the Tribe leading 50-0.

Dawn Adams returned the opening kick-off of the second half 63 yards for a touchdown.  After Shell's extra point, the score stood at 57-0.  The Tribe defense again forced a turnover on downs, and the offense took over at the Iowa 42 yard line.  A 28 yard pass from Schmidt to Piper set up the five yard rushing TD by Burns.  After Shell's PAT, the Tribe improved its lead to 64-0.

On the opening play of the Xplosion possession, April Due intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Iowa 30 yard line.  The Tribe moved the ball into the redzone, but could not convert on third and long, and once again elected to send the field goal unit on the field.  After a roughing the kicker penalty, the Tribe offense retook the field with first a goal from the seven yard line.  A holding call on teh Tribe offense negated a short gain by Tequella Burns.  Katie Sowers kept the ball on a read play and rushed for a 17 yard touchdown.  Shell connected on the point after and the scoreboard read 71-0.

The Tribe defense forced a final turnover on downs and the offense took the field.  After a series of runs by Burns and Katie Sowers, Sowers connected with Jasmine Kingcannon for the final score of the evening on a 21 yard pass over the middle.  After Shell's PAT went wide left, the final score of the game stood at 77-0.

The team will resume play on June 25th in the first round of play-offs against the Upper Midwest Champions (to be determined in the final two weeks of league play).

The Kansas City Tribe defeated the Wisconsin Wolves 57-0 to improve to 6-1 on the season.  The Wolves won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball.  The Tribe forced a punt on the opening series and started the initial drive on the 25 yard line.  The offense quickly moved the ball to the seven yard line, where the Wolved picked off a pass off the hands of Melissa Piper.  The Tribe defense forced Wisconsin into a three and out, and the Wolves attempted to punt from their endzone.  Katie Sowers blocked the punt attempt and recovered it for the opening score of the evening.  Amanda Sweeten added the PAT, and the Tribe led 7-0, five minutes into the game.

The Tribe's defense came up big again on the next Wolves drive, as Jeanne Rankin intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Wolves' 38 yard line.  Tiara Burns moved the chains to the 28 yard line, and then Jenny Schmidt found Liz Sowers for a 20 yard reception to make it first and goal.  On the next play, she hit Melissa Piper on an 8 yard slant for the touchdown.  Sweeten connected for the point after, to make the score 14-0.

On the next defensive series, the Wolves were once again forced to punt after Leslie Gent sacked the quarterback for a loss of eight yards.  Dawn Adams added a nine yard run for the Tribe offense, then Schmidt found Adams in the flat for a 27 yard play.  The scoring drive ended with Schmidt connecting with Lara Guscott for a 25 yard catch.  The two point conversion failed, making the tally 20-0 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Amanda Sweeten reached the endzone on the ensuing kick-off for a touchback, and the Wolves took over on their own 20 yard line.  Once again, the Tribe defense forced a punt, but the Tribe fumbled the return, and the Wolves regained possession to end the initial quarter.

The second quarter brought more of the same, as the Wolves once again punted the football on the opening drive.  The Tribe offense started the series on its own 29 yard line.  On the initial play, Jenny Schmidt found Liz Sowers down the sideline for a 71 yard completion for a touchdown.  A completion from Katie Sowers to Melissa Piper resulted in the two point conversion, and the Tribe led 28-0 with just under 13:00 minutes remaining.

Wisconsin was once again forced to punt the football, and Melissa Piper returned the ball 26 yards, to the Wisconsin 34 yard line.  The Tribe elected to attempt a field goal inside the redzone, but a botched snap forced Katie Sowers into an incomplete pass and the Wolves took over on downs at the eight yard line.  The Tribe defense forced the Wolves into their second punt from the endzone, but this time a roughing the kicker penalty resulted in a fresh set of downs from the 15 yard line.  Ultimately, the Wolves punted the football, and a 29 yard Schmidt to Guscott completion and subsequent run by Schmidt took the Tribe to the seven yard line.  However, the Tribe failed to score and turned the ball over on downs just before the end of the half.  The Wolves offense took a knee to end the second quarter, and the score at halftime stood at 28-0.

The Tribe received the kickoff to start the third quarter, and Katie Sowers returned the short boot 62 yards for her second special teams score of the game.  Tiara Burns added two points off a direct snap on the conversion, expanding the Tribe lead to 36-0.

Liz Sowers intercepted the Wolves on the ensuing drive and returned the ball 24 yards to the Wisconsin 39.  Schmidt once again found Guscott for a 28 yard completion up the sidelines to the 11 yard line.  Schmidt kept the ball on the next play and added a rushing touchdown to her tally for the evening.  Katie Sowers rushed for the two point conversion, making the score 44-0.

Jeanne Rankin added her second intercpetion of the game on the next Wisconsin drive.  The Tribe offense retook the field at its own 32 yard line.  Schmidt connected with Melissa Piper for a 28 yard completion, and Dawn Adams added a 16 yard run, before taking a pass in the flat 29 yards for her first touchdown on the season.  Sweeten added the point after try just as the quarter ended, resulting in a 51-0 at the start of the final quarter.

After another Wolves punt, the Tribe offense started the next drive on the Wolves 44 yard line.  Tiara Burns gained four yards, Katie Sowers kept the ball on the zone read and advanced the football 20 yards to the edge of the redzone.  Back to back runs by Tequella Morris put the Tribe on the 4 yard line, where Katie Sowers finished the drive with a completion to Melissa Piper for her second touchdown of the game.  A botched snap on the PAT kept the score at 57-0.  On the Wolves final possession, KC recovered a fumble and took a knee to end the game.  Schmidt finished the game 12/17 for 269 yards, four TD's, one interception and a rushing touchdown.  Lara Guscott led all receivers with 95 yards on five catches.  Liz Sowers added two recpeptions for 91 yards.  Dawn Adams finished with 105 all purpose yards.  Defensively, Mindy White led with 11 tackles, Yo Ramirez and Magdalen Obiefule added eight and seven respectively.

Start making plans today to attend the final regular season home game against the 4-1 Iowa Xplosion on June 4th.  A Tribe win will secure the Midwest Division Championship, and home field advantage for the first round of play-offs on June 25th.

Battle of Missouri Lives up to Billing

The Battle of Missouri, Show-Me State Showdown, or whatever your personal preference for naming the long anticipated Tribe v. Slam match-up, lived up to its billing, with the Tribe winning the game 37-34.

The Tribe won the coin toss and elected to defer its choice to the second half.  The Slam received the kick-off, and the Tribe took over on down on its own 44.  After a pair of Jenny Schmidt carries, and a short pass to Melissa Piper and Katie Sowers, the Tribe faced fourth down on the Slam 40 yard line.  KC elected to go for it and Schmidt connected with Regan Campbell for the 40-yard touchdown reception.  After a missed extra point attempt, the Tribe led 6-0.

St. Louis advanced the ball down the field with a combination of passes and runs before power back #36, Chris Hampton, scored on a dive from the two-yard line.  After the PAT, the Slam led 7-6.

Leslie Gent retunred the line drive kick 13 yards and the Tribe offense started on its own 43.  After a two yard gain by Tiara Burns and a six yard completion from Schmidt to Lara Guscott, the Tribe again elected to go for it on fourth downa mere half yard inside St. Louis territory.  Schmidt hit Liz Sowers on a quick slant route for a 12 yard gain and the first down.  However, on the following play, an offensive pass interference call backed KC up to its own 47.  After a short completion to Katie Sowers, Schmidt found Melissa Piper in the middle of the field for a 38 yard gain, and the Tribe advanced to the redzone.  On the next play, Schmidt connected with Campbell in the flat for an 18 yard gain to make it first and goal.  After a failed running attempt, the Tribe went to an empty back field and Schmidt scrambled out of the pocket and found Katie Sowers in the back corner of the endzone for the score.  Sweeten added the point after, and the Tribe led 13-7 with less than a minute remaining in teh opening quarter.

St. Louis returned the ball past mid-field and started their own drive at the Tribe's 49 yard line.  After a series of short complettions with a few runs scattered in, they connected on a 10 yard pass to the corner of the endzone.  After the PAT, the scoreboard read 14-13.

A penalty forced the Slam to rekick and after a 14 yard return by Gent, the Tribe started on its own 42 yard line.  Tiara  Burns started the drive with a nine yard run up the middle.  On the following play, Schmidt connected with Liz Bourland on a slant route for a 12 yard gain and the first down.  A quick pass to Liz Sowers moved the ball to the 30 yard line. St. Louis eventually stopped Burns short of the first down on third and short, but the Tribe elected once again to try for a fourth down conversion.  This time, Schmidt kept the bnall and advanced seven yards to move the chains.  The series ended with a 20 yard completion to Liz Sowers for the touchdown.  After a botched extra point snap, teh Tribe failed to convert, making the score 19-14.

St. Louis once again methodically marched the ball down the field and punched it in from the 2 yard line.  Howver, this time the Tribe defensive unnit broke through the line to block the extra point attempt, resulting in a 20-19 Slam lead.

Lara Guscott returned the ensuing kick-off 31 yards, and the Tribe started its drive at the Slam 35 yard line.  An eight yard completion to Katie Sowers, followed by an 18 yard catch by Guscott moved the Tribe to the St. Louis nine, where Schmidt once again found Katie Sowers for a nine yard TD reception.  However, the Tribe agin failed to convert the two point attempt, making the tally 25-20.

After a short kick-off, the Slam took over near mid-field and quickly advanced the all down the sidelines into Kansas City territory.  A tough Tribe defensive stand forced a punt with only seconds remaining in the first half.  The Tribe took a knee to go into half time.

The Tribe received the opening kick-off of the second half.  After a nine yard sack by the Slam defense on the initial play, Schmidt ran the ball 15 yards to make a second and short five.  Later in the drive, Schmidt found Guscott down the middle of the field for a 17 yard gain, and advancement to the St. Louis 37.  Burns added a five yard run, and then Schmidt hit Liz Sowers for another 12 yard gain to make it into the redzone.  After a series of short gains, the Tribe elected to go for it on fourth down, but fell short.  St. Louis took over on downs at its own 12 yard line.

The Slam ultimately attempted a fake punt with a direct snap to Hampton, but Regan Campbell tackled her in the backfield for a loss, and the Tribe offense took over on the Slam's 30 yard line.  Striking immediately, Schmidt hit Campbell with a 30 yard strike down the middle of the field for the score.  The Tribe elected to keep the offense on the field for the two point try, but Melissa Piper was stopped just short of the goal line, making the score 31-20.

The KC defense forced a Slam punt on the next series, but the Tribe staretd its offensive series deep in its own territory, from the 14 yard line, to end the third quarter.  A series of penalties and a five yard sack backed Kansas City to the two yard line, where they were forced to punt from their own endzone.  After a 15 yard return, St. Louis started its initial fourth quarter drive from the Tribe's 12 yard line.  Kate Evers, #4, scampered around the corner for the score.  After the PAT, the Slam trailed 31-27.

Leslie Gent returned the kick-off 26 yards to place the ball at the 50 yard line for the Tribe offense.  Schmidt immediately found Liz Sowers down the sidelines for a 20 yard completion, followed by a 30 yard completion to Guscott for the score.  However, once again Kansas City failed to convert on the extra poitn attempt, making the lead 37-27 midway through the final quarter.

After a mishandled catch on the kick-off, St. Louis managed to recover the ball at its own 42 yard line.  On the initial play of the series, Hampton leaked out of the backfield on a play action pass for a 24 yard completion down the hash.  Evers ran a naked bootleg, and kept the ball for a 26 yard gain, resulting in a first and goal from the nine yard line.  Hampton eventually powered in from the one yard line for the TD.  The Slam connected on the point after, cutting the Tribe lead to 37-34.

After a successful on-side kick, St. Louis recovered the ball at its own 42 yard line.  On the first play, Katie Sowers crashed through the offensive line for a 10 yard sack.  The Tribe forced the Slam to a three and out situation, and the offense took over on its own 35 after the punt, with just over three minutes remaining in the game.  A short run and two incomplete passes forced the Tribe into a punting situation, and the Slam resumed possession at the 35.  On the second play of the Slam's drive, Melissa Piper intercepted quarterback, Liz Lacy, and the Tribe offense once again took the field.

After two short run plays, Schmidt found Guscott in the flat for a crucial third and long conversion.  Ultimately, the Tribe was forced to punt, however, and St. Louis had one final attempt for a comeback.  Once again the Tribe defense came up with a big play, as Magdalen Obiefule stopped the running back for a five yard loss on first down, and then a host of Tribe players sacked the quarterback on third and long for an additional eight yard loss.  The Slam's final pass fell short of the intended target, and the KC offense took the field to end the final quarter on a knee.

Schimdt finished the night 23 of 34 for 315 yards and six touchdowns.  She also added 27 yards rusing.  Lara Guscott tallied 89 yards on six catches with a touchdown, Campbell went for 88 yards on three receptions, two resulting in scores.  Liz Sowers added 74 yards on six receptions with a TD.  Katie Sowers finished with 35 yards on five receptions - two in the endzone.  Tiara Burns led the team in rushing with 28 yards on nine carries.

Defensively, Regan Campbell and Magdalen Obiefule led with 12 tackles each, both having three for losses, and Obiefule adding two sacks to the tally.  Katie Sowers and Mindy White added 10 tackles to the mix, four and two for losses respectively.  Sowers finished with two sacks and White with one.

The Tribe returns to action this Saturday against the Wisconsin Wolves,  Kick-off is 5:00 p.m. at Center High School.
