Time Expires on Tribe in Windy City

It was a wet and windy day as the Kansas City Tribe took the field at Winnemac Stadium in Chicago.  The weather played a role in the game from the initial play, when Leslie Gent lost the ball after an impressive kick-off return to midfield.  The Force recovered the ball at their own 49 yard line.  Jessica Springer advanced the ball to the 11 yard line off a series of runs before mishandling a direct snap, ironically recovered by Gent.  The Tribe in turn, failed to capitalize on the turnover, and the Force retook possession of the ball.

The teams traded two additional series before Springer broke away on a 45 yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.  After the PAT, the force led 7-0.  After an incomplete pass, Schmidt was forced into a 10 yard sack.  On the next play, she hit Melissa Piper in the flat for an 18 yard completion.  However, on fourth and short, the Force defensive line came through immediately and Schmidt was had to throw the ball away.  Chicago took possession on the Tribe 38 yard line.

The Force continued to run the ball with Springer and secondary tailback, Brandy Hatcher.  They faced a 4th down and 5 from the Tribe 20 yard line.  A well executed play action pass to tight end Kim Marks resulted in the second score of the day.  After the failed 2-point conversion, the Tribe trailed 13-0 with 30 seconds remaining in the initial quarter.

In the inaugural play of the second quarter, QB Jenny Schmidt connected with Regan Campbell for an 18 yard gain to the Force 34 yard line.  A couple plays later, Schmidt again found Campbell for a 28 yard gain, which resulted in a first and goal from the 5 yard line.  Graves eventually powered it in from the 3 yard line, and Amanda Sweeten connected on the PAT despite a roughing the kicker penalty on the Force, which was assessed on the ensuing kick-off, to make the score 13-7.

The Tribe looked primed for a comeback when Katie Sowers picked off Chicago quarterback, Sami Grisafe on a fourth down play.  However, the squad was unable to capitalize on the turnover and the Force took over on downs.  Springer once again found the endzone on a six yard TD run.  After a failed conversion, the Force led 19-7.

The Tribe offense took to life once again as Schmidt connected with Regan Campbell and Larisha Graves.  A pass interference call took the Tribe in the red zone, where Schmidt ran the ball in from the 1-yard line with a minute remaining in the first half.  Sweeten added the PAT and the Tribe trailed 19-14 going into half time.

The Force's initial drive of the second half stalled out almost identically to the initial drive of the game when Springer again fumbled inside the redzone and Gent recovered.  History continued to repeat as the Tribe failed to produce points on the turnover, and Chicago took possession at their own 30.  The continued ground attack of the Force set up a 1 yard quarterback sneak at the end of the third quarter.  After a successful 2-point conversion, the Force increased the lead to 27-14.

Graves took the short kick-off 30 yards to the Force 32 yard line to end the third quarter.  On the first play of the offensive series, Schmidt scrambled and found Katie Sowers down the middle of the field for a 23 yard completion to the Chicago 9 yard line.  Two plays later, she connected with Liz Sowers in the endzone.  The Tribe missed the point after, and the score stood at 27-20.

The Force responded with another series of runs, culminating with a third Springer touchdown with just over six minutes remaining in the game.  After the PAT, the Force held a 34-20 lead.

After penalties forced the Tribe deep into its own territory, Schmidt found Lara Guscott across the middle of the field on back-to-back plays to move near midfield and then connected with Melissa Piper for a 37 yard play to take the Tirbe to the Force 28.  Schmidt kept the ball on the next two plays to make it to the 4-yard line.  She ended the scoring drive with a quick toss to Katie Sowers for the touchdown.  After the blocked extra point attempt, the Tribe trailed by 8, with the score standing at 34-26.

The Force turned the ball over on downs, and the Tribe offense took the field with 45 seconds remaining on the clock and no timeouts.  Despite completing three passes for 40 yards, time expired on the clock as the Tribe made it into Force territory.

The Tribe returns to action on May 14th at Center High School to face the 3-1 St. Louis Slam.  The Slam suffered their only loss to the Force this season as well.

The KC Tribe defeated the Nebraska Stampede 88-0 last Saturday night to improve to 4-0 on the season.  The Stampede elected to receive the ball after winning the opening toss.  A well executed kick-off return took them well inside Tribe territory to start the opening drive.  However, the Tribe recovered a fumble inside the 15 yard line, and the offense took the field.  Jenny Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers on the opening pass of the game for an 87 yard touchdown.  Larisha Graves added the two point conversion with an end around run.  On the next drive, Schmidt again connected with L Sowers on a 10 yard strike, and then Katie Sowers found Melissa Piper for the conversion to make the score 16-0.  After a touchback, the Stampede turned the ball over again, and the Tribe ended the first quarter at mid field.

Schmidt located Guscott across the middle on the opening drive of the second quarter.  This time K Sowers kept the ball on the conversion, to make the score 24-0.  On the next offensive series, Schmidt connected with Regan Cambell, in her first game back this season, and first reception nonetheless, for a 74 yard touchdown pass.  Katie Sowers hit sister Liz Sowers in the back of the endzone to improve the score to 32-0.  The Tribe's defense forced a third Stampede fumble on the next series and took over inside the Stampede's 15 yard line.  After Graves took the ball to the one yard line, Schmidt again found Campbell in the endzone, Graves added the two point conversion, to put the Tribe up 40-0.  On the ensuing possession, the Stampeded turned the ball over a fourth time on a fumble.  Jenny Schmidt threw an 18 yard TD pass to Katie Sowers, and then another Sowers to Sowers 2 point conversion occurred to make the score 48-0.  On the final drive of the half, Schmidt again connected with Liz Sowers on a 15 yard slant route into the endzone.  Amanda Sweeten added the PAT, to send the Tribe into the locker room with a 55-0 lead.

The second half featured some big runs by Larisha Graves.  She opened the first series with a 51 yard TD run.  Sweeten added the extra point and the Tribe led 62-0.  Nebraska managed to make it into Tribe territory with a fake punt that led them to the 25 yard line.  However, the Tribe D responded with two big tackles for a loss to force the punt.  After Liz Sowers' punt return was called back on a penalty, she caught a 44 yard touchdown pass from Schmidt.  After Sweeten's PAT, the score stood at 69-0.   On the final series of the quarter, Campbell intercepted the ball across the middle of the field and returned it for another score - after a failed PAT - the score stood at 75-0 heading into the final quarter of play.

Liz Sowers added the remaining scores of the evening with a 41 yard TD reception from back-up QB Katie Sowers, and a "pick 6" for 47 yards, to which Sweeten added the extra point for a final score of 88-0.  Schmidt finished the game 15/22 with 358 yards and eight TDs.  Liz Sowers scored six touchdowns on 7 receptions and 224 yards.  Graves added 149 yards on nine carries, with one TD on the night.

Defensively, the Tribe recorded its fourth shut-out of the season, forcing four fumbles and two interceptions (both returned for scores).  Magdalen Obiefule finished the evening with 12 tackles, Mindy White, Kennisha Walker, and Katie Sowers added 10, 9 and 7 respectively.

The Tribe travels to Chicago, Illinois this weekend to take on the Chicago Force.  The game will be broadcast via internet at http://chicagoforcefootball.com.

The Tribe improved to 3-0 after defeating the KC Spartans 76-0.  The Spartans won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half.  The Tribe quickly made it on the scoreboard with a 63 yard touchdown pass from Jenny Schmidt to Katie Sowers.  Amanda Sweeten added the PAT to make it 7-0.  On the ensuing kickoff, Melissa Piper recovered a short kick, and the Tribe offense returned to the field.  Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers for a 24 yard touchdown pass and Katie Sowers scampered into the endzone on the two point conversion to put the Tribe up 15-0.  The Spartans were forced to punt the ball on their initial possession.  Schmidt then connected with Lara Guscott on back-to-back passes of 29 and 18 yards to make the score 21-0, as the Tribe failed to convert the two point attempt.

The second quarter brought much of the same, as Schmidt threw a 56 yard strike to Liz Sowers, who made her way into the endzone.  Katie Sowers connected with Melissa Piper for the two point try to put the Tribe in the lead 29-0.  After a Mindy White interception, Schmidt again led the Tribe down the field, capping off the sccoring drive with an 11 yard completion to Leslie Gent for her first touchdown of the season.  Amanda Sweeten added the PAT, to make the score 36-0 going into halftime.

The Spartans received the ball to start the second half, but failed to manufacture a scoring drive.  The Tribe responded with another TD pass from Schmidt to Guscott,  this one going for 38 yards.  After the failed two point conversion, the Tribe led 42-0.  On the next Tribe drive, Schmidt found Liz Sowers for an 8 yard TD completion.  After Amanda Sweeten added the PAT, the score stood at 49-0.  The Tribe added one more score in the third quarter after Liz Sowers intercepted the ball.  After a holding penalty negated the touchdown, Tribe running back Tiara Burns rushed 6 yards into the endzone.  The Spartans blocked the extra point attempt, and the third quarter ended 55-0.

In the final quarrter, Schmidt connected with Melissa Piper for a short gain, and then Piper took the ball 60 yards into the endzone.  After Sweeten made the PAT, the Tribe led 62-0.  Liz Sowers added her third touchdown of the evening on an 11 yard slant route into the endzone.  Sweeten again split the uprights to make the score 69-0.  The final score of the night resulted when back-up quarterback, Katie Sowers scrambled into the flat and found Piper for a 1 yard TD toss.  Sweeten added the PAT to make the final score 76-0.

The Tribe traveled up Interstate 35 to take on the Iowa Xplosion on April 9th.  The team defeated their divisional opponent 82-0.  The  game started with the defense holding the Xplosion to negative yardage on the initial three downs.  The Xplosion attempted a fake punt on fourth down, but were stopped short of the first down marker.  The Tribe quickly drove down the field to score on a 7 yard strike from Jenny Schmidt to Liz Sowers.  Larisha Graves added the two point coversion to make the score 8-0 with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.  The next offensive series ended in similar fashion, as Schmidt again connected with Sowers, this time on a 4 yard TD pass.  Katie Sowers recoverd the muffed snap on the PAT and threw to Melissa Piper to make the score 16-0 with about six minutes left in the initial quarter.

The Tribe caught the Xplosion more than 20 yards off the ball and took advantage with an on-side kick on the ensuing play, which KC recovered.  Larisha Graves finished the scoring drive with a 37 yard run.  Amanda Sweeten added the extra point.  At the end of the first quarter, the Xplosion's offense showed some life, and made it into KC Tribe territory.  The drive was thwarted by an interception by Jennifer Marker, which she returned for 67 yards before being caught by Xplosion running back Jennifer Boling on the one yard line.  With seconds left in the quarter, Melissa Piper scored on a one yard sweep.  Sweeten added the PAT, and the Tribe led 30-0 going into the second quarter.

The Tribe's scoring continued into the second half with Schmidt connecting with Lara Guscott for a 17 yard TD.  Iowa was then forced to punt from their own endzone after the Tribe's stifling defense garnered tackles for losses throughout the series.  The Tribe took over on a short field, and after failing to reach the endzone, Amanda Sweeten hit her first field goal of the year - a 36 yarder, to make the score 68-0.

On the Tribe's next offensive series, back-up quarterback Katie Sowers connected with sister Liz Sowers on a 75 yard TD pass.  The final score of the evening occurred when Sowers ran a quarterback keeper 54 yards for score.
