Women's Football is back, and so is the Kansas City Tribe. The team opened the 2011 season with a 77-0 victory over their intra-city rival, the KC Spartans.
After the defense forced a Spartan punt, the offense opened up with a 72 yard scoring drive, which included a 28 yard completion from Jenny Schmidt to Lara Guscott on a third and long play and then another 36 yard touchdown completion to Katie Sowers. Running back Larisha Graves added two points with an end around run for the conversion.
On the next two offensive series, Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers for a 19 yard touchdown pass across the middle, and a 55 yard 4th down conversion, which resulted in another score, giving the team a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Schmidt scampered through the middle for a 28 yard TD run in the second quarter and Graves added a 3 yard TD run, set up by a 15 yard catch by newcomer Leslie Gent, for a 35-0 lead going into the half.
The Tribe continued to score at will in the second half, starting with a 55 yard touchdown completion from Schmidt to Liz Sowers, followed by a 25 yard touchdown pass to Katie Sowers. Graves added another score with a 28 yard TD on an out route from Schmidt. The punt return unit contributed to the action as well with a 26 yard TD by Lara Guscott after the Tribe defense forced the Spartans to kick from their own endzone.
The defense added another score to the board after Katie Sowers recovered a fumble forced by Lanie Ford and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown. Sowers also ran in the two point conversion.
The final score of the evening came when Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers for a 53 yard TD pass. Schmidt went 13-17 with 342 yards, 7 passing TD's and an 8th on the ground. Liz Sowers finished with 4 receptions, all going for touchdowns, and 157 total yards. Katie Sowers had 97 yards, and three TD's. Larisha Graves carried the ball five times for 48 yards. Amanda Sweeten connected on all 6 PAT kicks.
