The Tribe defeated the St. Louis Slam 63-42 to win Division 11 of the Women's Football Alliance, and finish the regular season with a 7-1 record.

The Tribe won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half of play.  The Slam received Amanda Shell's kick-off, and after a short return, the St. Louis offense took the field at its own 40 yard line.  After moving the ball into Tribe territory, the Slam fumbled the football, which Kansas City recovered at the 38 yard line.  Jenny Schmidt found Larisha Graves, and then Courtney Hampton for back-to-back 11 yard completions to move into Slam territory.  Graves added a four yard gain, and then Schmidt connected with Guscott for a 21 yard pass to the 15 yard line.  Schmidt completed the drive with a 15 yard strike to Hampton for the score.  Shell added the extra point, and the Tribe led 7-0 with 11:34 remaining in the first quarter.

The Slam answered on the ensuing drive, marching down the field on a series of runs before completing a 20 yard pass to Keyonna Smith for the score.  After the PAT, the score stood at 7-7 with 7:14 left in the initial period.

Graves picked up the line drive kick-off and returned it 14 yards near mid-field to start the Tribe's second drive of the game.  A combined attack of Graves' runs and completions to Guscott led the Tribe to the 14 yard line.  A completion to Mindy White advanced the ball inside the five, and the drive ended successfully as Schmidt hit Liz Sowers in the endzone for the TD.  Shell's PAT went wide left, and the Tribe led 13-7 with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter.

Shell's subsequent kick-off sailed inside the 10 yard line, but Kate Evers returned the ball to the 26 yard line.  The Tribe defense forced a turnover on downs, and the offense resumed play on the Slam 34.  Schmidt connected with Sowers, and then White to advance inside the redzone.  An attempted pass to Sowers took a lucky bounce and fell into Hampton's hands for the score.  Graves added the two-point conversion, and the Tribe's lead increased to 21-7 with 1:27 left in the quarter.  Despite making progress into Tribe territory, the Slam's possession was thwarted when Megan Franco intercepted the ball at the 40 yard line.

Schmidt quickly found Sowers for a 12 yard completion to move into Slam territory nearing the end of the initial quarter of play.  After resuming play, Schmidt hit Guscott for a 28 yard gain down the sideline.  Guscott and Hampton each ran the ball for short yardage, and then Schmidt connected with Graves across the middle to move to the Slam 11 yard line.  Hampton reigned in the next pass and tip-toed along the sidelines for the score.  After Shell's PAT, the Tribe led 28-7 with 11:56 remaining in the first half.

St. Louis game out with guns blazing on the first play of the drive and completed a 54 yard pass to Kate Evers for the touchdown.  The extra point was good, and the lead was sliced in half at 28-14 with 11:41 remaining in the half.  The Slam kick-off backed the Tribe up to the five yard line.  The Tribe combined Graves' runs with Schmidt to Sowers completions to move the ball past mid-field.  Schmidt then hit Hampton for an 11 yard gain, which placed the ball at the Slam 33 yard line.  However, Keyonna Smith intercepted the following play and returned the ball 75 yards for a Slam score, closing the gap to 28-14 after the extra point, with 7:33 remaining in the second period.

The kick-off sailed out of bounds, and the Tribe offense started from its own 40.  The offense failed to move the chains, and punted the ball back to the Slam on fourth down.  The short kick went out of bounds at the St. Louis 42, where the Slam offense started its drive.  The offense marched down the field, piecing together short carries, and capped off the scoring drive with an eight yard run by Evers for the TD.  After the extra point, the teams were tied at 28-28 with 3:51 remaining in the first half.

Hampton fielded the kick-off on the bounce and returned the ball 20 yards to the 37 yard line.  A quick run by Graves, followed by a completion to Hampton and then White moved the ball to the Slam 25 yard line.  However the Tribe failed to convert on the next series and turned the ball over on downs at the Slam 24 with under two minutes remaining in the second quarter.  St. Louis could not convert and ultimately punted the ball back to the Tribe.  Kansas City took a knee to go into half-time with the score tied at 28.

St. Louis kicked off to start the second half of play.  Sowers took the ball 10 yards to the Tribe 47.  Graves advanced the ball 13 yards, followed by an 11 yard completion to Guscott.  The Tribe were momentarily backed up after a false start, but Schmidt hit Sowers perfectly in stride for the 31 yard touchdown reception.  Shell split the uprights, making the score 35-28 with 11:56 remaining in the third quarter.

The Tribe defense forced another Slam punt, which Liz Sowers fielded at the 33 yard line.  The possession was short lived as St. Louis stripped the football from Graves on the second play of the drive.  However, Liz Sowers returned the favor when she took the ball away from the intended Slam receiver three plays later, giving KC the ball on the 24.  Back-to-back passes to Guscott advanced the ball to the 40, before a Tribe penalty temporarily stalled the drive.  However, Graves broke for big yardage with a pass in the backfield to move into St. Louis territory at the 38 yard line.  The tandem of Schmidt and Sowers connected on two of the next three plays, resulting in a 16 yard touchdown completion.  Shell's PAT increased the Tribe lead to 42-28 with just over five minutes remaining in the third period.

The Tribe defense came up big once again, forcing a three and out.  KC took over on the Slam 25 yard line after no return.  Guscott took the initial pass 60 yards to the Slam 15 yard line, and then caught the ensuing pass for a 15 yard touchdown pass from Schmidt.  Shell's extra point resulted in a 49-28 Tribe lead with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter.

It appeared the Tribe defense forced another three and out, but a roughing the pass penalty gave St. Louis new life, and the penalty advanced the ball into KC territory.  Then, a series of short runs moved the ball inside the redzone, where another Tirbe penalty gave the Slam a first and goal from the nine.  Taylor Hay took the ball up the middle for the score.  After the extra point, the scoreboard read 49-35 with 14:49 remaining in the game.

Shannon De Clue returned the Slam kick-off 16 yards to the St. Louis 49.  The Tribe failed to convert, and punted the ball back to St. Louis.  After a bobbled reception, the Slam recovered the ball at the 35 yard line.  A bad snap on third down moved the ball back to the 12 yard line, where St. Louis was forced to punt.  The Tribe chose not to field the kick, and took over at its own 46 yard line.  The Tribe elected to punt on fourth and one, and St. Louis took possession at the 21 yard line.  Another three and out by the Slam led to a Guscott 26 yard punt return to the St. Louis 39.  Graves rammed through the middle for a 16 yard gain.  The drive ultimately ended when Schmidt threw a pass to Guscott on the boundry of the endzone and Guscott managed to tightrope the line to stay in bounds.  Shell once again split the goal posts, and the Tribe led 56-35 with less than five minutes in the game.

Lindsay Downs intercepted the pass on the St. Louis drive, and the Tribe offense regained possession at its own 40 yard line, but an illegal procedure penalty moved them back to the 35.  However, Liz Sowers broke a short reception for a 38 yard gain to the Slam 27 yard line.  Schmidt then connected with White on a scramble to move the ball to the 17 to go into the two minute warning.  Liz Sowers finished the drive with a 16 yard reception for the touchdown.  After Shell's PAT, the Tribe led 63-35 with 1:01 remaining.

The Slam returned Shell's kick-off to the 31 yard line, and Kate Evers took the ball 69 yards for the touchdown on the initial play of the drive.  After the PAT, the Slam closed the lead to 63-42 with 42 seconds remaining.  The Tribe offense took a knee to end the game.

Defensively, Leslie Gent led with 7.5 tackles, followed by Magdalen Obiefuly with 6.5, and Mindy White with five.  Liz Sowers, Lindsay Downs and Megan Franco each added an interception.

The victory earned the Tribe a first round play-off bye.  The team will be back in action on June 30th at Center High School, taking on the winner of the Minnesota Machine and the St. Louis Slam.  Kick-off time is 6:00 p.m.

Tribe Secures Post Season Berth After 83-0 Victory over Spartans
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

The Tribe defeated its divisional rival, the KC Spartans 83-0 this past Saturday to secure a post season berth.  The Tribe kicked off to the Spartans to start the game.  After a booming kick and short return, the Spartans started with the ball at their own 13 yard line.  The Tribe defense forced a three and out and the Spartans punted the ball from deep within their own territory.  Mindy White fielded the short punt at the 30 yard line where the Tribe offense took over.  Jenny Schmidt made short work of the drive as she completed the intial play for a 30 yard touchdown pass to Lara Guscott.  Amanda Shell added the extra point and the Tribe led 7-0 just two minutes into the game.

Another long kick-off by Shell resulted in the Spartans starting their drive at the 7 yard line.  The initial run by Lisa McCreary resulted in a loss and the Spartans were backed up inside the five.  McCreary attempted an end around run on the following play, but was tackled in the endzone by Jasmine Kingcannon, giving the Tribe an 8-0 lead with the safety.  This led to a free kick by the Spartans from the 20, which Liz Sowers returned to the Spartans 35 yard line, where the Tribe offense took over.  Schmidt connected with Courtney Hampton for a 14 yard gain, followed by a 16 yard run by Larisha Graves, taking the Tribe to the 5 yard line with a first and goal.  Schmidt found Hampton in the front corner of the endzone for the five yard TD.  Shell added the PAT, making the score 16-0 with 12:13 remaining in the first quarter.

The Tribe's special team unit once again produced excellent field position, pushing the Spartan offense back inside the 10 yard line.  After making a first down, the Spartans fumbled the all on a pitch, and Linzi Weilert recovered for the Tribe.  The offense once again took the field in Spartan territory, this time starting at the 32.  After a first down illegal procedure penalty backed the Tribe up, Schmidt quickly found Liz Sowers down the sideline for the 37 yard score.  Shell split the uprights, and the Tribe led 23-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the intial period.

Shell's ensuing kick-off sailed out of bounds, giving the Spartan offense the ball at the 35 yard line.  The Tribe D forced another Spartan punt on first down, and an unlucky bounced returned the ball to the line of scrimmage.  The Tribe offense started its drive at the Spartan 36 yard line.  Schmidt completed a first down pass to White, and then Graves took over the series, advancing the ball three times in a row, and finishing off with a one yard TD run.  Shell connected on the PAT, giving the Tribe a 30-0 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter.

After starting at their own 35 yard line, the Spartans put together a series of runs to advance the ball into Tribe territory before the Tribe defense forced the punt.  After no return, the Tribe offense started its drive from its own 12 yard line.  A 31 yard completion to Guscott across the middle of the field set up a 56 yard touchdown run by Sowers the first play of the second quarter.  Sowers then completed the two point conversion pass to White, making the score 38-0.

Lindsay Downs recovered the Spartans fumbled kick-off return, and the Tribe offense retook the field at the Spartan 38 yard line. The possession was short lived as Guscott tip toed down the sideline, taking a short completion to the endzone.  Shell added the point after, and the Tribe led 45-0 with 14:19 remaining in the first half.

The defense came up big once again, forcing another Spartan fumble, which Tiffany Cartwright recovered.  Graves took the hand-off 29 yards for the touchdown on the first play of the drive.  After Shell's extra point, the Tribe increased the lead to 52-0.  The Spartans failed to field the subsequent kick-off, and the Tribe offense again took the field at the Spartan 32 yard line.  A bad snap on the first play led to a second and 25 from the 42 yard line.  However, a 17 yard completion to Sowers, followed by a 20 yard completion to Juanita Moten, resulted in another Tribe TD.  Shell added the point after, and the score stood at 59-0 with 12:10 remaining in the half.

The Spartans once again fumbled the kick-off, leading to a Tribe recovery, and another offensive possession from the Spartan 44 yard line.  A 28 yard Graves run placed the Tribe on the one yard line with a first and goal, but another bad snap led to the Spartans recovering the ball at the Tribe seven.  However, the Tribe defense forced another three and out, which led to a Spartan punt from the endzone, and the Tribe resumed possession at the 25 yard line.  Schmidt completed an 11 yard pass to White, and then a 19 yard TD pass to Sowers (after the prior 14 yard pass was called back for an illegal player down field). Shell's point after resulted in a 66-0 Tribe lead with 7:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Another fumbled pitch by the Spartans resulted in Graves recovering the ball at the 30 yard line.  A quick pass to Hampton led to another Tribe score as she dodged the Spartan defense down the sideline.  After Shell's PAT, the Tribe led 73-0 with 5:53 to go in the first half.

The Spartans once again made it into Tribe territory, but ultimately had to punt.  The ball sailed into the endzone.  After the touchback, the Tribe took a knee through the series to go into halftime.

The Tribe received the ball to start the second half of play with a running clock.  White returned tke kick-off 13 yards to the 49 yard line.  Liz Sowers took her first snap as the Tribe signal caller and eventually completed a 44 yard pass to Kingcannon to take the Tribe to the four yard line after a Spartan penalty.  The Tribe settled for its fist field goal of the season as Shell connected for the 25 yarder, increasing the lead to 76-0.

The Tribe defense forced another Spartan punt, but Cierra Childerss fumbled the kick, and the Spartans recovered in the Tribe redzone.  The Tribe defense held firm however, and the Spartans turned the ball over on downs to end the third quarter.  The Tribe offense failed to convert, and punted the ball 37 yards to its 38 yard line where the Spartans took over.

The Spartans punted once again, but Hampton returned the kick 71 yards for the touchdown. Shell added the extra point, making the score 83-0 with 7:00 remaining in the game.  The teams traded possessions a final time before time expired.

The 6-1 Tribe are on the road this weekend against the 5-2 St. Louis Slam for the Division Championship, and a first round bye in the post season.  Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. at Oakville High School, located at 5557 Milburn, St. Louis, MO.

Amanda Shell added the extra point, and the Tribe led 7-0 with 13:41 remaining in the first quarter.

After Shell's kick-off, the Stampede started its initial drive at the 33 yard line.  The Tribe defense forced a three and out, but a muffed punt return by Cierra Childress led to a Stampede recovery and Nebraska resumed possession on the KC 43 yard line.  After gaining a first down, Nebraska mishandled an option pass that led to Megan Franco recovering the fumble at the Tribe 40.  A holding penalty on the Tribe negated a 40 yard run by Liz Sowers, but the combination of Graves' runs and Sowers' catches led the Tribe to the one yard line.  The Stampede defense tackled Schmidt for a five yard loss to give the Tribe third and goal from the six.  Schmidt quickly found Guscott in the flat for the score.  After Shell's PAT, the score stood at 14-0 with 3:06 remaining in the initial quarter.

Nebraska took the ball 82 yards on the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown, but the Tribe defense blocked the extra point, making the score 14-6 near the end of the first quarter.

Graves trucked through to the 26 yard line.  On the second play of the drive, Schmidt connected with Guscott for her third TD of the game.  KC failed to complete the two point conversion, but led 20-6 with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter.

Shell's kick-off sailed out of bounds, and the Stampede took possession at its own 40.  Despite a defensive off sides penaltiy, the Tribe forced another three and out, aided by back-to-back tackles for a loss.  Courtney Hampton returned the punt 26 yards to give the Tribe offense possession at mid-field.  Graves advanced the ball 23 yards on two carries to give KC a first down in the Nebraska redzone.  Schmidt connected with Guscott once again for the TD.  The Tribe again failed on the attempted two point conversion, making the score 26-6 partway through the second period.

A Tribe facemask at the end of the kick-off return led to Nebraska taking possession at the KC 44 yard line. The Tribe defense once again forced the punt, but Cierra Childress' 82 yard return was called back for a Tribe penalty, and Nebraska re-kicked the ball.  The Tribe offense ultimately started at its 25 yard line.  After a 15 yard completion from Schmidt to Hampton, Graves produced two first down runs for 24 yards.  On the next play, Schmidt hit Guscott for the 35 yard touchdown - her fifth of the afternoon.  Shell split the uprights, and the Tribe led 33-6 with 6:30 remaining in the first half.

After no return on the kick-off, the Nebraska offense took possession at its 33 yard line.  Despite carrying the ball into Tribe territory, the Stampede failed to convert, and the score stood at 33-6 going into half-time.

The Tribe kick-off to the Stampede to start the second half.  After Shell's kick-off sailed out of bounds, the Nebraska offense started at the 35 yard line.  The Stampede advanced the ball into Tribe territory before reaching a punting situation.  However, the Stampede attempted the fake, but the pass was broken up by Jasmine Kingcannon and the Tribe offense took the field on the 45.  Liz Sowers advanced the ball to the Nebraska 8 yard line after breaking a short pass for big yards.  Schmidt then found Sowers on a quick slant pattern for the score.  Sowers attempted two point pass was intercepted in the endzone, but a Nebraska penalty forced a second attempt.  However, a high snap prevented the re-kick, and the Tribe led 39-6 with 8:36 remaining in the third quarter.

The Stampede's next possession was short lived as Cierra Childress intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 28 yards to the Nebraska 33, where the Tribe offense took the field.  Melissa Dimmitt advanced the ball 10 yards for a first down, and then Schmidt connected with Liz Sowers on another quick pattern for the score.  Shell's PAT was good, and the Tribe increased its lead to 46-6 with just over five minutes remaining in the third period.

The Stampede made it into Tribe territory once again and attempted a pass on fourth down which fell short. The Tribe offense took over at its own 48.  Megan Franco took the hand-off, and advanced into Nebraska territory before having the ball stripped.  The Stampede receovered the fumble and took possession at the 46 to start the final quarter of play.

Nebraska marched down the field inside the Tribe redzone, where they attempted a field goal from the 15 yard line.  It sailed wide left, and the Tribe offense took the field once more.  Dimmitt, Burns and Childress produced back-to-back-to-back first downs to move into Nebraska territory.  Another series of shorter runs set up a 20 yard pass from Schmidt to Kingcannon, and the Tribe had a first a goal from the 10.  Schmidt connected with Melissa Dimmitt for the score on the subsequent play.  Shell added the PAT, making the score 53-6 with 2:31 left in the game.

The Tribe left Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. to travel up I-35 to take on the Machine.  Both teams topped their respective divisions, with a single loss on the season.  Kick-off was scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  The Tribe received the opening kick-off and quickly drove down the field, finishing the drive with Jenny Schmidt finding Lara Guscott up the sideline, and Guscott tiptoed into the endznoe for the score.  Amanda Shell added the extra point, and the Tribe led 7-0.  The Tribe recovered the ensuing kick-off, and again drove down inside the redzone.  Schmidt kep the ball on a zone read play and walked into the endzone untouched.  A miscommunication led to a failed 2-point conversion, and the Tribe led 13-0 minutes into the first quarter.

The Tribe defense stopped the Machine for no gain on the intial two running plays.  Facing a third and long, Minnesota attempted a pass across the middle, which was intercepted by Magdalen Obiefule and the Tribe offense retook the field on the Minnesota 37 yard line with 10:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Both team's biggest opponent proved to be Mother Nature that evening, as the sky opened up and rain started to fall.  The teams retreated to the locker rooms to wait out the Storm.  By the time the skies cleared, it was a moot point, as the Machine field resides in Woodbury, MN, which has a city ordinance requiring lights out by 10:00.

After the Memorial Weekend league-wide by, the Tribe resumes play at Center High School on June 2nd at 5:00 against the Nebraska Stampede.
